Mediation vs. Litigation

About 90% of all cases that I deal with in the restorative justice process are between between people that know one another. In situations where people stay together in a complexes or in a suburb its important that we get along. This week I dealt with two neighbors that had cases open against one another regarding a fight they got involved with when one of the neighbours dogs pooed on the lawn of the others. This then led to a serious fight, leading in the end to assault charges brought in against the parties. In situations, like this mediation is a clear alternative to litigation to get the neighbours at least on talking terms. Communities and neighbours should not get to situations like that, Mediation might work in getting people talking and considering alternatives to violence
